Can I Do More Than Go With The Flow?

At a Time When Hope is a Hard Thing to Come By, Let Us Create Our Own

In the wake of everything going on right now, I've been wondering what I can do to help that also won't endanger myself or anyone I love. The fact that we even continue to suffer from new Covid cases is startling, and it's still a deadly disease with a limited vaccine. And I don't know about you, but I definitely have loved ones I want to protect.

Something interesting I've been set to experience this month has been the process of grieving. At the beginning of the month, I lost the last of my childhood pets after fifteen long and wonderful years with her. I've found the process, once again, is not linear.

I think the thing I've struggled with most is the fact that I want nothing more than to be seen. Like my suffering is not in vain and I am emotionally validated. I hate that I can't just absolutely lose it for a little bit of time before pulling myself back together again.

But as the title of this post states, can I do anything more than go with the flow and hope to come out of this weirdly distressing time alive?

Yes, yes I can.

While I believe the easiest route anyone can take is to stay in the flow of life and do things that align with the general direction life is taking you, I also know that sometimes the direction you're going seems unclear. I would love more than anything to tell you that it's easy to change the direction of the flow, but usually the alternate path comes with a life-altering price.

For me, I believe that came in the form of a death, which is why I feel so discombobulated and uncomfortable. And due to the current events, that may also be why you are feeling uncomfortable and the collective world is feeling uncomfortable, as well.

The good news for any of you is that nothing drastic needs to occur for you to really get on the path you want to be on.

Start with fifteen minutes per sitting of whatever the task is you're feeling overwhelmed by. Eventually those small bursts of doing things will become habits. Then you will feel more accomplished and capable of doing more things that take you into the life you really want to be living.

Though it is not an immediate fix, rarely are we satisfied without putting a little bit of work in to make us feel proud of ourselves and those around us.

So, whatever you're big goals and dreams are, although they may seem difficult, try a baby step or two to help you move in that direction. And above all, remember that we are living in unprecedented times which call for some amount of grace for ourselves and those around us.
