Is Writing a Book Worth It?

...and Other Existential Writing Questions

Many people enter the new year with the resolution to write a book. Those ambitious souls may even resolve to publish by the end of the year.

If you are one of those new writers who set a writing goal this year and find yourself at the end of the first month with questions, we're here to tell you if all the work you're putting in is worth it.

Millions of people will publish a book this year. Some are high fantasy novels, memoirs, or children's books. Many will be self published as a legacy book for an author's friends and family only. Others will publish with aspiring bestseller and award-winning goals in mind.

Whatever your goal is as you start your book, there are important things to keep in mind as you get into the development and writing of your book to keep you motivated, writing, and on track to accomplishing your goals and making it all worth it.

The first step to writing is determining what you want to do with your book once it's finished. Some believe self publishing is the best way to save money. Others have goals to be published by a publishing company. You can determine which route is best for you as an author by checking out Self Publishing 101 and Trade Publishing 101.

Once you know how you want to publish, start establishing a timeline to help keep yourself accountable. Depending on the writer, a well established timeline can be the difference between finishing your book this year or several years down the line.

If you're anything like me, I am more successful in sticking with my goals if I have an accountability partner to hold me to it. If you need ideas for sticking with your goals or finding an accountability partner, jump on a quick call with me to set up a plan.

Finally, the most successful writers are those who recognize what kind of writer they are, where they are in the process, what agents and publishers they are looking for, and how to best market their work to get the word out about their new book.

Don't fret if that sounds stressful, though. There are professionals who can help you, coach you, cheer you on, and point you in the right direction. If it sounds like a lot to have to do it alone, give us a call or set up a consultation to discuss your options for success.

Here's to an amazing and accomplished year of writing!
